Nero d’Avola is the most important & widely planted red wine grape variety in Sicily & has been for centuries. Its present-day name derives from the grape’s distinctive dark coloring & the town of Avola on Sicily’s southeast coast. The area was an epicenter of trade & population movement during the Middle Ages & Nero d’Avola was frequently used to add color & body to lesser wines in mainland Italy.
Color: intense ruby red, tending to purple
Nose: enveloping fruity fragrance of morele cherries, black currents, vanilla, pepper, tobacco & coffee
Flavor/Finish: intense, full & expressive, with a rich, velvety taste, great body & harmonic persistence & pleasant tannins; flavors of cherry, spice & vanilla
